In 1971, surf film legend Alby Falzon directed the instant classic Morning of the Earth, illuminating Bali’s virtually undiscovered waves. That film inspired goofy-footer Wayne Lynch to surf Uluwatu, which became a historical event when famed photographer Dick Hoole captured him in a barrel—the very first to be caught on film at the soon-to-be iconic break. The footage quickly spread and found its way to illustrious surfer Gerry Lopez, who made a pilgrimage from his native Hawaii to have his turn.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Decades later, in 2001, Bali Villas opened, inspired by those pioneering surfers of the golden ‘70s. In 2008 ownership changed and the property was renamed Uluwatu Surf Villas, cementing it as the destination for those seeking waves with a side of Bali magic. Morning Light Yoga Studio debuted in 2014, offering ocean-view vinyasa classes, in 2018 Mana Uluwatu followed, adding all-day dining and drinking elements to the trifecta. In 2022, we built a two-tone concrete skate park at the back of our property in a lush jungle environment, a natural complement to exceptional waves out front. We have also added a magnificent deck made of reclaimed teak and ironwood, located just steps away from the beach via a private staircase.
